New year, new Prime Minister: Bill English the new PM

Following John Key’s resignation from the office of Prime Minister of New Zealand, the National Party selected Bill English to succeed him. No surprises there. Bill English was previously the Finance Minister under John Key.

Mr Steven Joyce will become the new Finance Minister. At least 4 ministers are retiring and won’t stand for election in 2017. Expect a few new faces in the National Party next year.

There are expected to be a few reshuffles of the National party before the run-up to the 2017 election.

Finally, on the Labour side, David Shearer resigned to take a UN role. His supporters congratulated him and wished him well. Labour party leader, Mr LIttle is expected to also reshuffle his party in preparation for the 2017 election.
